Here is the step-by-step process to get your troop chartered

NOTE: Before you get started you need to have*:

  • An address where the 'welcome kit' can be sent (street address, not PO box)
  • Charter Organization (church) information
    • Church name (legal name)
    • Denomination
    • Address
    • Phone
  • Senior Ministry Leader Name and Email
  • The Troop Number you would like to use (If you are not sure ask one of our area team leaders for help identifying a good number)
  • Ability to pay the $99 pre-charter fee (this must be paid online at the time of pre-charter)

If you have all that, then here's what you need to do:

  1. Go to https://trailLifeUSA.com
  2. Click the START A TROOP button
  3. Complete the form
    when you click the button it will take you to another page - with a list of 'stuff' that you get when you pre-charter
  4. Click the PAY $99 and Begin button at the bottom
    That will take you to the Trail Life online system TrailLifeConnect.com and display the Pre-chartering Application
  5. Complete this Application with ALL the indicated details for the your new troop
    Be SURE that you complete the entire for especially the Senior Ministry Leader info (withouth that you can not continue)
  6. Click the green button at the bottom to go to the Sign and Pay page
  7. Sign the form (per the instructions on the page) and pay the pre-charter fee

That's all you have to do to being the chartering process.

NOTE: Make SURE that your Senior Ministry Leader watches his email for information about a phone meeting with one of the Trail Life National Team. The troop can not proceed with the chartering process without that phone meeting. Those usually happen within a week or two; however, it may take longer during busier times of the year (esp. fall).

*ALSO: If you have already completed the initial Start A Troop form (with just your contact info), then you should have received an email from Trail Life USA (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) In that email you will find a green Start a Troop button. Just click on that button in that email when you have all the rest of the information noted above and you can complete the pre-chartering process.
